What is Tofu Vegan Spam?

Before we dive into the recipe, let’s clarify what tofu vegan spam actually is. Unlike the traditional canned variety, tofu vegan spam replaces meat with tofu and a blend of flavorful seasonings. The result is a protein-rich, plant-based alternative that can be used in different dishes.

Ingredients

1 package of firm tofu

2 tablespoons of soy sauce

1 tablespoon of liquid smoke

1 teaspoon of paprika

1 teaspoon of garlic powder

1 teaspoon of onion powder

1/2 teaspoon of black salt (kala namak)

1/4 teaspoon of turmeric

1/4 teaspoon of ground pepper

2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

1 tablespoon of maple syrup (optional)

Directions

Drain the tofu and press it to remove excess water. You can use a tofu press or place the tofu between two paper towels and gently press down.

In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, liquid smoke, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black salt, turmeric, ground pepper, and maple syrup (if desired). Mix well to create the marinade.

Slice the pressed tofu into thin rectangular pieces, resembling the shape of traditional spam slices.

Place the tofu slices in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, ensuring all sides are coated. Let the tofu marinate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavours to develop.

Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, carefully place the marinated tofu slices in the skillet.

Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden brown and slightly crispy.

Serving Suggestions

In a sandwich: Layer the slices between your favourite bread, and add some vegan mayo, lettuce, and tomato for a delicious vegan spam sandwich.

 In a stir-fry: Cut the cooked tofu spam into cubes and toss it into a flavorful stir-fry with your choice of vegetables and sauces.

Fried rice: Crumble the tofu spam and fry it with rice, mixed vegetables, and soy sauce for a tasty vegan alternative to traditional fried rice.
